Pack Walk - 2023 Q1

  • Ed R Levin County Park 3100 Calaveras Road Milpitas, CA, 95035 United States (map)

Join us for our first park walk in Northern California. Be sure to bring lots of treats!!

Pack walks are amazing opportunities to participate in proper dog socialization from experienced handlers and professional trainers. Walking neutrally with a group of dogs without the pressure of direct interactions helps your pup become more calm and balanced around other dogs - it’s an especially great training tool for reactive dogs.

We aim to always have a trainer present for all of these pack walks, though we may not always be able to. For this first one, we will have Wolf Mother K9 volunteering along with her assistant and Lee Johnson from Bespoke Canine.

Trainers are present to assist and guide handlers with best practices for the pack walk, this is not a training session for reactivity. If you need training for your dog please inquire with the trainers about their training options after the walk.

It will be $20 to attend per dog with all proceeds going to CBR to help us provide training for more dogs in our rescue. Please submit your donation via PayPal, Venmo, and/or Debit/Credit Card. To register for the pack walk, please fill out the form at the bottom of this page and ensure your first and last name when you donate matches what you register with so we can link the two.

Please be aware that the park has a parking fee of $8. We apologize for the inconvenience if this is unexpected.

Schedule

  1. Check in - We will have a table set up with a sign in sheet, some merch you can purchase, and to speak with one of our team members if you have any questions.

  2. Introduce our trainers and experienced handlers to you so you know who to look out for and ask questions to during the walk. All will be wearing CBR “Volunteer” pins as well.

  3. We will begin walking in as big of a circle as we need for the dogs to get them into a migratory mode. Movement helps the dogs refrain from getting hyper-focused on each other.

    1. If your dog is reactive, we will have our trainer direct you on what to do until we start walking.

  4. Depending on the dogs in attendance, we will let you know if some talking will be ok or if it should be more of a meditative walk. Some dogs may get too anxious, stressed, and/or excited if there is too much noise. We want to make sure the environment is as comforting for the dogs in attendance as possible.

  5. Begin walking around 10:15am in a single file line, at this point we will not allow others to rush up to the group. Late arrivers can join after checking in, but will need to maintain whatever distance the dog ahead of them is most comfortable with.

  6. Walk for 15-20 minutes and then turn around to walk another 15-20 minutes back to where we started. Ideally we will be walking for 30-45 minutes total.

Rules

  1. Respect each other’s space and maintain at least 5 feet of distance from each other. Some dogs are here for training and to work through reactivity.

  2. No approaching other dogs, even if on leash. Maintain distance. This event is to provide proper socializing with other dogs and some dogs may not react well to being approached in a straightforward manner or without a slow integration of some sort.

  3. Bring poop bags and pick up after your dog.

  4. Leashes must be 6 feet long or shorter, nothing longer will be allowed and you will be turned away.

  5. Muzzle your dog if they are reactive and maintain distance that your dog is comfortable with even if it seems far to you. If this is your first time and you’re unsure how to participate with a reactive dog, please keep your dog in the car and come out to speak with our trainer. They will be able to advise on best practices for your participation.

  6. If your dog is reactive, they will be towards the end of the group at whatever distance is more comfortable and workable for your dog.

  7. If you arrive late, do NOT walk up to the group. You are welcome to participate, but you will need to stay towards the back at whatever distance the dog in front of you is comfortable with. Please be aware that the more reactive dogs will be towards the end of the group and as far from the group as they need to be to feel comfortable.

You will be asked to leave if:

  1. You do not maintain a minimum of 5 feet of space.

  2. You allow your dog to rush up to other dogs.

  3. You do not have a muzzle on your reactive dog.

  4. You have a leash longer than 6ft.

  5. A CBR representative determines your participation is a risk to the dogs and/or people involved.

This event is subject to change if there is a chance for rain. We will provide an update via email a week before and will give at least 24 hours notice if the event will be canceled due to the weather. Please be sure to add Info@CaliforniaBullyRescue.org to your email contacts to ensure our email doesn’t get sent to spam.

3/9/23 Update: While rain is forecasted for the event there is no indication of there being rain at 10am or later for a few hours. The event WILL continue. The park path is fully paved! It will be cold, so you may want to bundle up.
